3D Textile Vessel Kay Dennis October Meeting 2024

 This month we welcomed Kay Dennis who had come to show us how to make a  3D vessel using Decovil Light [a light interfacing with a heat-activated glue side].  

She arrived with all sorts of equipment for us to use but best of all were the pretty, light and delicate 3D vases she had made using a range of materials and stitch, with Decovil as the base. Each had a theme and were displayed to inspire us. [See Below.]

Kay also brought two ready painted and embellished flat vessels waiting to be joined into cylinders to make two vases.

We all started with a flat piece of Decovil, glue side uppermost. and then chose a plastic container to wrap it around into a cylinder. We would do most of the work while the vase was flat.

Kay demonstrated how to apply the paint well watered  so that a very light effect would be achieved. The paint could be applied by brush, sponge printed, stencilled or any way members chose.

We were then able to apply anything we wanted to build up texture and a "picture". Members used paper, ribbons, threads, glittery fabric etc. and interesting textures and colours began to appear.

After members were satisfied with their application of textures they were ready to begin their stitching. Some used hand and some machine stitching and some were going to use a combination of the two.

 As the stitching was added the pieces began to integrate into a whole.

One member more or less finished her vase completely and she heated the join to make a cylinder after machine stitching to integrate the piece. A close up of the stitching can be seen in the second picture.

The colour of the vase is beautiful and because of the Decovil it has a light and airy feeling.

 Most of us took our vessels home to finish the stitching and then complete the vase. It was a good day and we all look forward to seeing the finished items.

Chair's Challenge postponed until The October Meeting

 If you had not quite finished your piece or had run out of time to start one the good news is you now have until the October Meeting!

Those members who had finished theirs and brought them in September  were photographed and you can see what a wonderful array of stitching there is already.

Remember they can fit into the box by folding or rolling.

A.G.M. Badge making - Ann Ellis Chair's Challenge September 3rd 2024

 Yesterday we held our AGM, chaired by Fran our Chairperson, looking to the past year and then to the future with the new committee once voted in.

After the AGM  Ann had  planned an activity for us  of making badges/keyrings/handbag charms and to get our creative juices flowing she had brought some wonderful examples. [See below.]

The colours of the birds, some of which were made into bunting, were jewel-like with their beautiful patterning.

Ann explained how we would set about making our badge,  she had also produced instructions and patterns if we needed them. Some members chose to make one of Ann's designs while others designed their own.

We set about quickly and quietly making our badges and lots of beautifully coloured felt began to appear.

We drew our design onto our felt and then began to stitch according to what we were making.

Slowly toadstools, birds, leaves and babushkas began to appear as felt was embroidered and stitched.

A piece of recycled plastic was used to stiffen the badge by placing it between two pieces of felt before sewing them together.

Great fun was had while making these little badges and some members finished or nearly finished their piece before they went home. Other members took theirs home to complete.

It was a good day and all thanks must go to Ann for planning and passing on instructions as to what we should do.
